The final essay is something that I have been thinking about for a while now. I want to pick a topic, like Kevin said, that I really am interested in because there are sooooooo many things that I have to write about that I don't give two craps about. I have an addiction to reality t.v. (lame, I know) that I feel if it was related to teaching composition somehow that it would be interesting to students. But, I haven't been able to find how the two could connect therefore having me come to the conclusion that reality t.v. is mainly useless.
I am also very into Psychology and I began coming up with some great literature that either psychologists have written or that I just enjoyed....but then I thought that everyone may not like Psychology. I don't want to shove this down my student's throats....I would be pissed if I was in a composition class and the teacher tried to use Calculus to teach me a new way to look at writing.
So, this led me to think about what kind of teacher I would want to be if I taught literature and composition. I think that the reason I fell in love with teaching English is because of the idea that I could teach cultural tolerance as well as literature and composition. There have been so many things that I have read in college that have taught me not only about composition, but also different cultures as well. With the knowledge of these different cultures I have gained an understanding. This is so important for high schoool students to learn because the stories about another culture's struggle are compelling and help the student to connect with them. There are also many books on many different cultures: Hispanic, African American, Irish, Asian American, GLBT, etc. The list goes on and on. I think it would be an exciting way to read and write actively.

I think relating composition to reality tv could be super cool... there is a ton you could talk about and im sure lots to research. my topic is outside the box also and I find writing that way so much more interesting because we can go whichever way with it.
ReplyDeleteReality TV would be quite interesting, actually. I know there were college courses on Survivor when it was at its peak. Might read Steven Johnson's chapter on reality tv in "Everything Bad is Good for You." He makes the case that reality tv actually makes us informed, critical humans. Strange, but interesting.
ReplyDeleteI think that's a really cool idea to talk about how to teach cultural tolerance. I think that students are pretty sheltered in high school, so they aren't always as prepared as they should be going into college or the real world. That's a cool idea about how to prepare them, though.
ReplyDeletelol EEEWWW reality tv. I'm not a fan. But it would make for a VERY interesting topic if you could come up with a way to relate it. I read an article in which rap music was compared to viking poetry...so I bet it can be done!
ReplyDeleteI love your ideas regarding literature and its relation to culture and including our youth in that is a great plan! I think you could write a really interesting paper on relating the two.
ReplyDeleteI think the reality t.v. idea would make a great topic. I think if you can relate it to language that would be great because then you could go on and use it as a lesson in a future composition course, and since lots of students love reality t.v. they would enjoy that lesson!
